Sirât is the type of film that grabs you by the collar, shakes you into an anxious frenzy, and spits you back out into the world wondering what the hell you just witnessed. Directed by Oliver Laxe, the Cannes-winning drama is a road movie that makes Mad Max look tame by comparison, though fantasy film this is not. Instead, the hyper-realistic, organic, textured imagery of the Moroccan desert is juxtaposed with EDM music and the grisly, haphazard shrapnel of war. If you’re wearing pearls, they will most definitely be clutched for the duration of its runtime. 5/5 Stars. Follow me on Letterbox’d.
